Make Mistakes. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!

by Jatin Chaudharyon July 2nd, 2010 at 5:29 am  1 comment

Share

Slowly but surely I am getting all partners in Point10 to start blogging. And here comes the first blog from Hiren Panchasara on why one should not be afraid of making mistakes.

————————————————————-

Yes, you are reading it right. Make mistakes.

Why? Because when you are ready to make mistakes, you are ready for failure and you are not afraid of the results. And when you are not afraid of results, essentially, you are not afraid of trying something new. That is the motive here. Try something new and don’t be afraid of people knowing about it.

Robin Sharma rightly says: Run towards your fears. Embrace them. On the other side of your greatest fears…lives your greatest life.”

Let me give you my own example. I had this little phobia: I didn’t like to show my incomplete code to anyone. What if someone found a mistake in it? They might think I am not good coder.  I liked to finish my code, test it and then show it to others.

What is so wrong about it? – Many things.

  • I might have made some mistake in initial design, which could have been caught by someone and I could have corrected it before starting to run it. Now to rectify my mistake, I would have to change the design and it’s very much possible that I would have to re-code.

  • Even if there was no mistake, another set of eyes could have suggested a different and more efficient way of looking at the problem I was trying to solve. In any case, I would have learned something more. My knowledge would have increased and it would have made me a better coder.

Consequences could be that people might call you stupid when they know you make a mistake. So what? You’ve learned something out of it, right? Einstein said once: I am thankful to all those who didn’t help me because they made me do things myself. Try and Do things, make mistakes and learn. As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?”Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

Thus making mistakes is essential as it shows many ways, not all of which would take you to the destination, but will surely help you achieve it. Although what is not acceptable is to repeat the mistakes. We humans are capable of learning out of our mistakes and grow. Making mistakes shouldn’t be used as an excuse for not working hard. When you make a mistake, go back to the white-board, think about it and learn from it.

Hiren Panchasara…
